Evaluation
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2.How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
When creating our media texts we had to make sure that they all follow the same scheme and linked together to create an overall product. The main thing we had to make sure of is that they managed to follow the same colour scheme throughout our different platforms e.g. the film poster, magazine cover and of course the teaser trailer. The use of the colour gold was used to resemble the treasure that these ruthless robbers were stealing. We also used basic monochrome colours which contrast each other. The use of this is so that we see two different sides, good and bad, black resembling the dark bad side and in contrast to this, the white resembling good and pure.
As well as using the same colour scheme, we used the same font throughout all of our media products. We used the font ‘Times New Roman’ because it looks structured and harsh which resembles our characters merciless behaviour. This creates a consistency within the product and connects them together. As a group we came up with the tag line ‘Every action has a price’. The meaning behind this is basically relating to the law, meaning that what these criminals are doing is wrong and there will eventually be a price to pay. There is only a matter of time. We included the tag line on both the film poster and the teaser trailer to continue linking them together and creating an overall brand.
Throughout our teaser trailer and on our film magazine we used consistent use of iconography. We made sure that the same weapons were used both while taking a picture for our film poster and when we were shooting our trailer. This also helps to link both media technologies together.
When creating our different media platforms we made sure that the mask was shown. The mask is a trademark of our work which makes the audience certain that these products will all be relating to the same film. The use of the mask covering the whole face and just simply the eyes showing gives off a sense of mystery. Consistent use of the same image entices the audience.
3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Starting off the research into thrillers allowed us to get an in depth understanding and knowledge through using different media technologies. The use of Wikipedia, Google and YouTube etc gave us the chance to have an insight into thrillers and what they are about. We was all at an advantage due to having done thriller for our AS course, so our understanding was already vague and brief. However, expanding on the information we already gathered would allow our work to be much more professional and the more information we had, the more confident we felt.
YouTube was a big benefit for when we wanted to explore the range of thriller trailers and ideas. We were able to get a visual aspect of the iconography used and how the trailers have been edited portraying the thriller genre. Having the chance to spend some time watching a variety of thriller trailers gave us the opportunity to express our ideas and let them flow naturally. Making mental notes on what seemed good and what wasn’t gave us the border of what we wanted to connote throughout our own trailer. This was very interesting and the different styles of trailers we could create were very wide, yet still connoting a thriller essence.
For our poster ideas Google images gave us the ideas we needed to express in our own creation of a thriller poster. Using the brief search of thriller posters gave us quite a lot to look through. We came across a poster for the new Halloween film which was directed by Rob Zombie. However, this is a horror poster yet we adapted some of the horror elements like the knife. Instead of a knife, we used a gun which is a stereotypical thriller iconography. This allowed us to represent the poster with more of a thriller feel linking it to our other projects.
We used the RM Shared Area facilities on the school computers due to multiple magazine covers in a folder. Looking through a variety of magazines such as Empire, Sight and Sound and Total Film we were able to choose a magazine that deemed appropriate to our idea. The use of having these folders on our Shared Area made it more accessible during lesson. However we couldn’t reach these folders from our home computers. With this in mind the Internet Explorer gave us the chance to explore and examine a wider range of magazine covers through the use of Google, comingsoon.net and IMDB. Each website we used allowed us to get direct searches as well as wider searches. Empire magazine being our choice we were now at the stage where we could use other media technologies into the specific use of Empire magazine covers.
During our research process there was a few issues that arose. Some issues were due to being on school computers we was limited to certain content making our searches difficult. Things such as over 18 content films were blocked as well as some documents online. Overcoming this issue we decided to do our individual research at home so we could access the content. After gathering information we all brought it in to put together and share with our group.
Media technologies allowed us to plan our trailer, posters and magazine covers to get our ideas more stable. To plan our ideas it was mainly done through the use of pen and paper. This gave us the chance to all sit around a table and converse ideas as a group. This was an interactive process where we could express our opinions on what we liked and didn’t. Doing it this way made it easier rather than doing it separately as each comment helped everyone else out with ideas. After getting notes down on ideas for each the trailer, magazine cover and poster we uploaded it onto Blogger. Blogger gave us the chance to use online software’s making the information and ideas we gathered to be accessible for the whole group at home. We could add any additional information if we felt that it was necessary in order to connote the thriller genre through our ideas.
When coming round to constructing our thriller projects, multiple software’s were used to gives us the professional look. Firstly we used Ribbet which is an online photo editing website. Ribbet was a great tool to use when creating specific details such as the colour for the title. Making sure the code for the colour was the same created consistency throughout our project. Photoshop gave us the opportunity to use a more sophisticated program when editing details to our poster and magazine cover. However, Photoshop can sometimes be temperamental when you haven’t used it before so there was an alternative to use Paint Shop Pro. Paint Shop Pro is a much more intellect Paint program yet not as complex as Photoshop.
Constructing our trailer we used Adobe Premier CS5 to edit our footage into an appropriate trailer looking stage. The process of this took a while as we needed to find the right standard as a trailer rather than an opening which we created in AS. Being familiar with Adobe Premier CS5 allowed us to easily browse through the program and find our way around. We used Ribbet for every element of our campaign to create continuity. For example we used Ribbet to create the same images of the captions/title. This allowed us to create them using the same colour, font style and size. Adobe Premier CS5 gave us the opportunity to import any special effects and sounds to create a thriller trailer. Gratefully there was plenty of copyright free music on the shared system we could choose from.
To create this campaign we used a variety of different hardware’s and software’s to create the overall outcome we were happy with. The main piece of hardware we used was the computer. This allowed us to complete all the editing and document stages of our ideas etc. Out of everything using the computer has been a top priority within this topic as we needed it to allow and ensure the best editing and software’s available to us. The second main piece of hardware we used throughout this course was the camcorder to capture our footage for our trailer. We also used a basic camera to capture images which we used for the poster and magazine cover. When shooting for our trailer to ensure the shots were as steady as they possible could be the use of a tripod was deemed appropriate. The tripod allowed us to stand back and watch the footage being shot without having to concentrate on keeping the camera steady. We also incorporated the use of a dolly for a unique circling shot making it flow well rather than being jumpy and handheld looking. There were a few issues with the camcorder to start off with as it seemed to cut out when filming. However, we all decided it was a good idea to leave the camcorder on charge longer than usual. This allowed the camcorder to get fully charged and this seemed to resolve the issue. There was less chance of the camcorder cutting out after this. With the camera for the photos there was no problem at all as we hadn’t used it for a long period of time.
When looking into the software’s we used throughout this course there is an equal usage of programs which helped us create our own campaign. Ribbet we used for all three projects to create the same font and colour creating continuity throughout. Ribbet was a great online photo editing software where we could create professional looking magazine covers and posters through the use of image edits etc. There was no problems what to ever when using this software, it was very simple and minimalistic for us to use. As well as Ribbet, Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro we’re all used equally as well to elements of our print work. When it came down to the use of editing print work some software programs were better for certain details and elements. This is where we had the choice of editing software’s which gave us the chance to experiment and see what looked best. Even though we used a variety of software, each one created the same overall appearance just with a different process. The overall problem we came across during these software’s was only the part where we couldn’t overcome how to use the system and then converted to something we could find easier.
For our moving image project, our thriller trailer, Adobe Premier CS5 was the appropriate software when creating the final footage. This software allowed us to edit our shots and footage to actually physically create our trailer. Without Adobe Premier CS5 making our trailer would be close to impossible without the other software’s of editing programs. Adobe is very sufficient and clearly laid out which helps navigate around the program. There were no problems with this program due to the simplicity and how easy it was to figure out which is suitable to anybody and every bodies needs. By having used the same hardware’s and software’s from AS, A2 was much easier than anticipated. We were all familiar with the programs and hardware’s which allowed us to feel comfortable with our equipment. During the A2 course we were introduced to new software’s where we could edit at ease, online. This gave us variety with what we have used allowing us to have a wide amount of experience from different hardware’s and software’s.
Using the hardware, a computer, to access internet resources like Blogger, Google Images and Slide Share helped us evaluate our products. Using Google images, we collected photos of software’s we have used throughout the course. Every software used has been beneficial in creating our own campaign for our thriller studies. Slide Share was needed for uploading part of the evaluation due to it being done as a PowerPoint presentation. However due to the school’s system it unfortunately blocked us from creating an account which would allow us to upload our work onto this software. To overcome this problem we made accounts from home and had to upload them another time when we could access our Slide Share accounts. The main piece of software we used to show our evaluation is Blogger. This is where all our work is placed which is easy as it keeps all our work together and organised. Blogger gives us the chance to post and update our work from anywhere where there is internet connection and where blogger is accessible.
